Our Inspiration

Visual:
Rosemary Lang
Lang is an incredibly important voice in the Australian art community. Her works not only deal with important and current subject matter but her essential aim is always to confront her audience. She often takes on political concepts and seeks to challenge Australian governments especially when expressing her personal philosophy in environmental protection and climate action. Her passion and aims when creating her works are something our team took on when approaching our project.

The Lock Up Exhibition - All Things Are Water
Violet Leonard viewed this exhibition as a volunteer at The Lock Up art space. In recalling the subject matter of the work an connection to our own ideas was made evident immediately. With our field research bluntly revealing the importance of water not only to Newcastle's landscape but the Novocastrian culture it this exhibition's exploration of the element of water, its symbolism and its significance.
The exhibition explores water as an:
- Environment
- Site of escape
- Emotional state
- Metaphore for time
- Containment
- A necessity for survival.

Kwangho Shin:
Shin Kwangho (Korean: ì‹ ê´‘í˜¸) is a South Korean painter currently based in Seoul. He is known for his impressionistic, distorted portraits, which he creates using oil, acrylic, and charcoal. Shin's paintings depict subjects using colours that represent the subjects' emotions, with brushstrokes and layers of paint often distorting the subjects' faces while drawing attention to the eyes.

His work influences our team through his expressionistic style and focuses on both humanity and individuals in all of his work. His love of portraiture directly translates to an understanding of emotion and tone, both of which are heavily important in the development of our own project and purpose.

Jacob Collier:

Jacob Collier is a singer, arranger, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist based in London, England. His style draws from elements of jazz, gospel, funk, classical, soul, a cappella, groove and electronic music, and often features extreme use of reharmonisation. His work influences our compositional choices as he is a self-made composer and his tracks display several different styles of music and elements of his talents which we can apply to our own study and the creation of our compositions.
"In 2016, Collier released his debut album, In My Room, which was entirely self-recorded, arranged, performed and produced in the small back room of his family home in Finchley, north London.[4] In 2017, Collier was awarded two Grammys for his arrangements of "Flintstones" and "You And I", both from the album.
In 2018, Collier began working on Djesse, a four-volume, 50-song album featuring more than two dozen artists and ensembles. The first album, Djesse Vol. 1, was released in December 2018; and the second, Djesse Vol. 2, was released in July 2019. In January 2020, Collier won another two Grammy Awards for his arrangements of "All Night Long" on Djesse Vol. 1 and "Moon River" on Djesse Vol. 2. " - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_Collier

Music:
Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey is a professional, American singer, songwriter, record producer, and poet. Throughout her career she has released six internationally successful albums and has been nominated for six Grammy awards. Her music style and genre have been known to be quite hard to describe and pinpoint, as it can be considered as several different genres, such as rock, baroque pop, and dreamy pop. However, her music has often been described as having a cinematic quality and has been known for its references to pop culture from the 1950s and 60s in particular. Due to her film-like genre, she had been asked to feature a song called "Young and Beautiful" (link down below) in the 2013 movie, “The Great Gatsby.” This is why she is a significant inspiration for our film project, as her music style is the type of music we aim to create and compose for our project. Her music uses a lot of orchestral and dramatic instrumentals, such as violins, piano and the cello, which is some of the instruments that we will be using in our composition.

John Williams

John Williams is an American film composer, conductor and pianist. He is one of the most well-known and highly successful film composers in the world and has composed music for some very popular films, such as the first three “Harry Potter” films, the “Star Wars” movies, the “Indiana Jones” series and the “Home Alone” films. As a film composer, who has many notable film scores, he has a big impact and influence on our composition for our film project. A lot of his film scores have a very dramatic and kind-of dark tone to them to suit the films he has composed music for, which is the type of tone that we want to create in our composition, as it will suit the subject of our film. Sea levels rising in a city like Newcastle is a very important and concerning issue that we need to focus on and help prevent, and the dramatic and dark tone in the score will really help to convey and show this important message in our film. We hope that it will assist in evoking emotions from the audience and encourage them to want to help this situation and climate change in general.
